Outback Adventure Tour Route

Itinerary

  • Day One

Gold Coast → Charleville → Birdsville

Checking into the Seair hangar at 6:45am, your adventure begins with a meet and greet with the other guests, before an early briefing and our departure sees the sun rising over the Gold Coast as you head west for a 2hr 30min flight to Charleville during which a light breakfast will be supplied.

This Central Queensland town is home to a Royal Flying Doctor Services base, a vital lifeline for remote Australians, the RFDS continues to provide medical services to the farthest corners of the country. While in Charleville you drop into the RFDS visitor centre for an inside look into the organisation.

On departure from Charleville we continue west, further into the Outback. Arriving into Birdsville at approximately 1:00pm we overfly the iconic Birdsville Racecourse just before landing and then taxi the aircraft up and park out the front of the Birdsville Hotel (just across the road).

Ever since William Blair first built the Birdsville Hotel in 1884, it’s weathered sandstone walls have been a welcome refuge to travellers from across the globe for more than 130 years. A destination in its own right, the pub has endured floods, fires and even cyclones to stand as a symbol of the spirit and character of the outback.

Spend the afternoon exploring Birdsville before regrouping at 4:30pm, to climb aboard the air conditioned 4WD tour vehicle and head west into the Simpson Desert to enjoy sunset drinks on Big Red, the first major dune as you enter the desert.

Watching the sun go down while sitting on top one of the tallest of the 1100 vivid red sand dunes in the Simpson Desert is truly a sight to see with some amazing photo opportunities.

After sunset, return to the Birdsville Hotel at 7:30pm for dinner and drinks at their heritage listed front bar.

The Birdsville Hotel holds a reputation as being one of the best in the country. Enjoy a drink at the front bar and converse with other travellers, some of whom will have been driving for days just to get there.

  • Day Two

Birdsville → Lake Eyre → William Creek → Innamincka → Dig Tree → Toogunna Plains Farmstay

Day two starts with a cooked breakfast, before departing Birdsville at 8:30am, you’ll get an opportunity to see Big Red and the Simpson Dessert from the air. Flying south and leaving Queensland into South Australia we pick up and follow the Diamantina River at low level through the Goyder Lagoon and then along the Warrburton River into the northern tip of Lake Eyre (North). While tracking south over Lake Eyre (North) we will climb up to allow you to see the sheer size of the 9,500 square km lake from your vantage point overhead.

Heading out into the Lake Eyre basin, overfly Channel Country and the Goyder Lagoon as you follow the river systems down to Lake Eyre. These creeks and rivers breathe life into an often barren landscape.

Lake Eyre is the largest lake in Australia. Renown for the amazing and changing colours of its surface, the only way to appreciate the scale of Lake Eyre is from above.

Heading west from Lake Eyre you’ll arrive in William Creek at 11:30am and learn how this unique town operates, generating its own power and water before sitting down to lunch and a cold beer at the only pub in town, the William Creek Hotel.

A true outback destination, pull up next to the William Creek Hotel before exploring the town. Located next to the Woomera testing range, the town has amassed a collection of landed rockets and missiles.

Heading back east towards Lake Eyre (South) we pick up the Coop Creek and follow it to Innamincka, a town rich in Burk & Wills history. Your stop here will include a hearty pub lunch before a quick flight to visit the historic Dig Tree.

A piece of Australian history, the Dig Tree was the site of a vital supply cache for pioneering explorers Burke and Wills.

Your final flight will see you heading north-east to Toogunna Plains Farmstay, where a sunset platter and campfire await. Capping off an unforgettable day before ending the night in your country charm ensuite huts.

Toogunna Plains Farmstay are located in the Channel Country midway between the towns of Eromanga and Quilpie. A 5th generation farm with over 130,000-acre sheep and cattle property.

  • Day Three

Toogunna Plains Farm Stay → Cunnamulla → Gold Coast

Start your day with a relaxing breakfast box at Toogunna Plains Farmstay before embarking on a fascinating three-hour tour of the property’s landmarks.

Explore abandoned homesteads, oil fields, shearing sheds and stunning geological formations while learning about the stations 5th generation pastoral history.

Next, you’ll head east to Cunnamulla, where a local guide will introduce you to the town’s highlights. After a hearty lunch, unwind at the new Cunnamulla Hot Springs, soaking in the rejuvenating mineral-rich waters beside the Warrego River.

Explore the constellation of geothermal mineral pools, as well as their cold plunge pool, sauna and steam room as you relax under the shade of a riverside coolabah and eucalyptus trees.

At 3:45pm it’s time to depart our final sector together as a group, flying east, heading back to the Gold Coast and returning to civilisation in the early evening. Wish your fellow travellers farewell, as the tour official concludes.

We have just come back from the three day/two night outback tour to Lake Eyre.
    What an amazing experience!
Charlie, our captain and chief tour guide, along with co pilot John were exceptional.
Both were engaging and knowledgeable and when
… More problems arose with ground activities, these were sorted flawlessly.
We would travel with this group again tomorrow.
    Thank you!

It was our pleasure to do the 3 day Outback Adventure with seair. It was an amazing trip. Seair were easy to deal with and nothing was a problem. The plane was clean and comfortable
… More and our two pilots, Charlie and Jeremy went out of their way over the three days to make sure everyone was having a good time. I would strongly recomend doing one of Seair's tours. In fact I am about to book another one.
